Children and youth growing up in the Soshanguve community are experiencing such challenges that no child should have to deal with. Challenges faced by this community are poverty related and are apparent in activities such as: drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, malnutrition, crime, the prevalence of HIV/ AIDS and unemployment; further exacerbated by issues of illiteracy. These challenges have an effect on children and youth in this community and there is a desperate need for interventions that will break this dire cycle of relentless poverty.
Hope Warriors Children’s Charity seeks to provide this relief by creating a platform for children in the Soshanguve community in hopes to improve on their situation, provide an alternative and place of refuge.
One of the program’s Hope Warriors Children’s Charity offers is a Numeracy and Literacy program. The aim of the program is to engage the learners in Numeracy and Literacy sessions using relevant and tested resources from partners such as Altus Sports and OLICO. During these sessions learners are given the opportunity to improve on their writing skills in the English Language and participate in reading clubs and spelling activities with involvement in a Spelling Bee. Math skills are also taught and the impact of the numeracy and literacy sessions on these offer the learners an opportunity to succeed in life. Benefits of the Numeracy and Literacy program:
- Improves the ability to understand, analyse, interpret and evaluate information
- Teach the ability to develop and express ideas and opinions
- Improves the ability to interact with others and participate in activities that will boost their self-confidence and self-esteem.
